Kabosu the iconic meme dog you've seen countless times on the internet dies
You’ve seen this face a hundred times

The caretaker of Kabosu, the dog that originated the Doge meme, has announced that the animal has passed away. It was an 18-year-old Japanese Shibu Inu who became popular due to a photo from 2010 in which she raised her eyebrow with a skeptical face, which originated the Doge meme. The meme proved so extremely popular that it spawned a cryptocurrency called Dogecoin supported by Elon Musk.

“She was the happiest dog in the world”

The internet is full of famous animals. Currently the trendy animal is the raccoon from the TikTok “Peter, Peter, Peter” meme, but in 2010 a meme of a dog raising her eyebrow skeptically became popular. It was Kabosu, who in one of the photos uploaded by his caregiver, Atsuko Sato, on his blog posed in such a way that it caught the attention of Internet users.

Memes of the animal began to be created and its popularity grew to unsuspected limits. It originated the Doge meme, which in 2013 was used to mint Dogecoin, a cryptocurrency so famous that it became the icon of Twitter when in 2023 Elon Musk decided to momentarily replace the blue bird of the social network (before transforming into X).

For the past few years, her caregiver uploaded photos of Kabosu on her own Instagram, which is now followed by more than half a million users. Through it we were able to know the state of the animal over the years, but in the latest publications it was appreciated its great deterioration due to advanced age, since the Shibu Inu walked assisted by a wheelchair and suffered from cataracts.

Finally, today, May 24, 2023, Sato announced his passing. She died without suffering and with the company of her owner, who claimed that she was “the happiest dog in the world”:

To all of you who loved Kabosu,

On the morning of May 24, Kabosu crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Thank you all very much for your support over the years.

She left very calmly, without suffering, as if she fell asleep while I felt the warmth of my hands caressing her.

Thank you all very much for loving Kabosu all these years. I’m sure Kabosu was the happiest bitch in the world.

That makes me the happiest owner in the world.

I would like to express my deepest gratitude to everyone who has sent us so much love.
