iOS 18 is about to be unveiled, and when Apple announces a new version of its operating system, we all want to test it before its official release. Fortunately, we don’t have to wait until September, as Apple offers a beta program for both developers and public testers, with the former having access on the same day as WWDC 2024.
That is why in this article we are going to tell you whatthe beta program is and what you have to do to install the iOS 18 beta on the day of the WWDC. By the way, we’ll show you how to be part of the public beta, if you can wait a few weeks and prefer something more stable. That said, you will find all the information below.
What is the Apple Betas Program
Apple’s beta program allows both developers and non-developers to test development versions of Apple’s operating systems to help report bugs. For some time now, it has been free, so you can install both versions at no cost.
Keep in mind that both developer and public betas, we will be testing unstable software, so it is advisable to have a backup in case we want to delete it. That’s why it’s also recommended to test beta versions on devices other than our main ones.
What’s the difference between the public and developer beta?
The developer beta is intended for developers to check that their applications are compatible with the new operating system, in addition to testing its functions. The plus point of this version is that it is available on the day of Keynote and can be installed without being a developer, you just need to have a developer account.
On the other hand, we have the public beta, which comes out a few weeks later. This version is much more stable because it is intended for the general public. It’s always safer to try this beta than the developer beta, but you have to wait a little longer to be able to do it.
When does the iOS 18 beta come out?
As we have anticipated, the first beta of iOS 18 for developers will be released on the same day as WWDC 2024, that is, on June 10. After the Keynote, Apple always releases the first betas of the systems that have been presented.
On the other hand, the public beta is released later, because it has to be adapted so that the public can try it. In this case, the iOS 18 beta will come out in mid-July.
How to get a free developer account and access the iOS 18 beta
- On an iPhone, we downloaded the Apple Developer app from the App Store.
- Open the app and tap on Account.
- Select Login.
- We sign in using our usual Apple ID.
- Once we have logged in to the Developer app, we can already go to the Settings > General > Software Update app on our iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch or Mac and we will see beta updates as an option.
How to install the iOS 18 public beta
In order to enjoy the public betas, we have to access the Apple Beta Software Program. Once on the website, we tap to register, sign in with our Apple ID and follow all the steps. As in the previous cases, in the Software Update section we will have to choose the public beta version.
You already know everything about betas, both what the program is, when the new betas come out and the difference between the two. Now all we can do is wait for Apple to present iOS 18 with its new AI features, the renewal of Siri, the customization of the home screen or the new features in the Control Center or the Settings app.
