Holding rocks in balance is an art that photographer and artist Michael Grab masters to perfection in his photographic series “GRAVITY GLUE”.
Grab explains that his work exists as a way to share his expertise in the art of rock balancing. According to him, the process resembles an intimate dance with the elements, adapting to the moments, adopting creative intuition, concentrating on breathing… In the silence… in exploring and redefining “possible.”
Michael says it’s a fun way to release stress, play, create, relax, and learn while challenging your skills and flirting with endless possibilities. Over the years, simple curiosity eventually evolved into a therapeutic ritual, ultimately fostering the presence of meditation, mental well-being, and the art of design.
The ephemeral nature of balance often encourages contemplations of detachment, beauty, and even death. One of the most beautiful experiences in the practice of rock balancing, Grab says, is the tacit dialogue between the rocks, the surrounding environment, and the creative flow itself.
How does he do it?
He says the most important part of balance in a physical sense is finding a sort of “tripod” to keep the rock standing. Each rock is filled with a variety of small and large indentations, which can act as support to keep the rock stable. Parallel to the physical element is the more fundamental non-physical element and the most difficult to explain in words. In short, it’s about meditation, or the search for a zero point in silence within oneself.
